I want to put in at discovery or near there. Fish and float all the way down the Sacramento river and end up in Suisun Bay by the mothballs. I plotted it out on a gps map plotting website and it was 77 miles. Im guessing two ten hour days with some hobo style camping at night. Im looking for the full Huck Finn adventure plus fishing. Stripers and LMB would of course be the targets.

Anyone ever done this?
Any considerations?
Will I have to traverse land with my kayak anywhere?
Is it worth the extra weight to bring live bait well? ( bubbling bucket nothin fancy)

Some of my concerns are tides, currents and shipping lanes.
I have gps and solar charging for iphone

Some input from more experienced Kayak anglers would be appreciated

I have been thinking about a similiar plan this spring but I only wanted  to paddle around Grizzly Island. Live bait should be fine if you just drag the bait bucket while fishing. camping along the river should be great. Let me know when you are looking into this it could be a fun adventure for sure.

Wow that would be one LA paddle.  Best do it soon before those Delta Breezes get with it.  I have done it on jet ski from Walnut Grove, ate lunch in Benicia at Kinder's, and then jetted back.  I can't imagine this on a yak but it might take a couple of days or more if the breezes pick up.

Some day I will do this trip from farther up, like from Red Bluff.  That river is so full of life and beauty.  During the shad run would be too much fun.  Shad up river, into LMB and stripers working downriver, native trout in the mix and a couple weeks to do it right.

Yup, sounds like a hell of an adventure.

Way back when the SF Chronicle's Glenn Martin (when Steinstra was still at the Examiner I think) did the entire Sac River (from Red Bluff maybe) to San Francisco Bay in a canoe and wrote about it in a series that ran on the front page.  I tried to Google it but couldn't find it.  Sounds like a great trip!

I have a mirage drive so believe it or not the distance is no big deal.
