I wonder if someone out there can recommend a level wind reel with line counter. Last weekend I borrowed a friend's and went after rockies with good success. I had never fished with this type of reel before and I like it a lot. Problem is I don't have any idea how robust
such a reel would be particularly with sand, etc. Thanks. Tim

Hi Tim,

It was good to meet you last weekend!

I use a Daiwa Sealine SG17LCA  for trolling and mooching mostly.  It's compact, light and I like it a lot.  I haven't had it long enough to attest to its durability.  Sand is a problem for any reel.  I've developed the habit of keeping mine protected with a neoprene reel cover for launching/landing.

Pat uses an Okuma Catalina CT-25D.  It's a beefier reel and she's pleased with it, but wishes it weighed a few ounces less.  I believe it's only available from Cabela's, but I'm not sure about that.

Both these reels place the line counter forward rather than beside the reel.  I believe this makes the reel more compact and provides less opportunity to tangle.

Thanks, Randy. You know, fishing and all the equipment has been off my radar for decades. Now, all I need to know is where to buy the Daiwa and an appropriate rod. Thanks again. Tim

I used to fish with an older Okuma with line counter.  Not sure the name but not the same one as Pat uses.  Used it for a couple seasons and it needs to be serviced.  I really like the LC esp since I wasn't using a FF at the time.

I believe there is Shimano Tekota that comes in a LC version.  ~$150.

Here is a link with local bait shops, perhaps one is local to you:

Besides my catalina, I have an Okuma Magda line counter.  It needs more TLC than the Catalina.  I have had to replace the little twistie thing that makes the levelwind go back and forth.  At least they didn't charge me for the replacement part.

I use this on my tigerstick when I was mooching for salmon last year.  Cheap, works, can be moved rod to rod.
