So I just received my turbo fin kit, but haven't installed it yet.

It came with a packet of loctite which is recommending I use on the threaded part.  Is this really necessary?  Just wondering if I can get away with not using loctite and not create any mess in the threading.

Use it per the directions.  It won't make a mess and it'll make sure that rod doesn't come out....which would be a nightmare OTW.

With all things loctite... use it when told to, never use it otherwise.  It only takes a little bit, so you shouldn't have a mess.  The most important thing to remember is that brass insert you are screwing into is set in plastic.  Do not overtighten... and if it is taking a lot of force to remove the originals, be careful.  It may not be a terrible idea to use a pair of vise grips to LIGHTLY squeeze the plastic to help lessen the twist on the brass to plastic connection.  However, it shouldn't be necessary as the originals should come out pretty easy.

I wasn't thinking about the brass insert part and I have a crazy tendency to overtighten everything so I'll make sure to be careful when doing that part.

Thanks for the tip guys.

No need to go crazy with it... thats why you loctite it.  Furthermore, if it did somehow wiggle loose the pin and splitring will keep it from going down to Davy Jones' locker.

Yea you want to use the loctite. Just a drop on each mast. It not only locks them in, it lubricates as your screwing them in too. I usually screw in till snug then about a 1/4 turn more. Screw in the brass adjusters a little too. They usually come a little on the loose side. I keep mine a little less then half way.

+1 on the one drop suggestion. If you use more than one drop the masts can be very difficult to remove. BTDT. Also to make sure you don't over tighten use a small wrench. I use a 4" crescent wrench.
