So My new bio-uncle is a free diver, he goes out abs and such and occasionaly spear fishes.  He is talking me into trying it out. I know my FJ's would leave me looking a 6"2 blue ice cube.  Are there any places that rent  wet suits and stuff for a newb to try out?

Any scuba dive shop rents out the basics, wetsuit, weight belt, boots, and hood.  Only a few have the mask/snorkel, and don't think they rent gloves at all.  If you think your going to get into the freedive sport, you can rent a freedive wetsuit from the freedive shop in sac, but that is far drive.  Later if you decide to really get into it, come back and we can give you options. :)

If your in san mateo, wallins just reopened :)

Diver Dans in the South Bay rents gear. Not sure if they rent out masks though. If they don't rent them out and you don't want to buy new you can always check craigslist. Just do a "dive gear" or "abalone diving" search and a few places selling used gear will pop up along with buying direct from the seller.

Have fun diving with your new uncle  :smt001

Here is Diver Dans info.

Driving from Petaluma to Bodega Bay on Bodega Ave there is a dive shop that opens at 5AM I believe. They rent the full package for abs.

+1  They have been very helpful. My buddy lost some of his own gear and they hooked him up with some rental gear for dirt cheap.

Squidder-

I'm about 30min south of you in Sunnyvale. Have a spare 1pc 7mm wetsuit that I think is a size lg you can borrow. Also have a spare mask and snorkel you can borrow. You can try on my spare booties, gloves and hood too. Also, depending on the timing I could hook you up with an ab gauge, iron and floatline too. Just let me know.
