Ok, fished my whole life but going for rockfish and lings off a yak will be new to me. If you could put together one setup, reasonable price, what kind of rod/reel would you go for. Gotta start somewhere right?

Tiger Rod with a Penn 220 GTO. Quality equipment and will not break the bank should you accidently donate to Neptunes locker!   :smt003

Which tiger rod do people usually get the regular one or the light one? medium-heavy or heavy? I am looking forward in getting one soon.

I would go with med heavy rod, but the reel is where all the power is.  Need some cranking power. I would go avet sx, but all depends what your price budget is.

Its a matter of preference and budget.  One thing to consider is saltwater kayak fishing is harsh on your gear.  If a wave catches you at the beach as you launch or re-enter, that particular type of water is loaded with fine sand.  It gets inside your reel.  I suggest not getting a reel that's on the high end.  Also get gear that is easy to disassemble and put back together.

I use the Tiger Medium Light 7 foot one piece. Landed 21lb Salmon and several 10 plus lings. I have a medium also, but think it is too heavy of a rod. I have used the Med for WSB, but never caught one. I even use the ML for Sturgeon. I have 1 paired with a Penn 320GTi and the one that I use most often is Shimano TR 200-g.

Medium heavy is way too much rod for this coast for anything you would fish for here. I use a medium heavy for sturgeon from shore and have caught 140 plus pound fish.

Go with medium. I use the medium 2 piece rod that works great in the bay.

I use a 7'crucial medium heavy with a quantum energy ss reel dropping 3oz jigs
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I will throw my hat in the ring for the tiger rod capable of handling 6oz. weights and a Penn 320.  I have a 321 as I prefer left hand retrieve.  They used to be called GTi as someone mentioned earlier.  They are actually called GT2's now just so you don't get confused.  Great reel for the money.

I will elaborate on one point.  I can't recall which weight of rod I have, I only advocate a rod that will handle a 6oz. jig head along with the drag created by a big bait because I hate the feeling of the rod being bent over all day even when there is no fish on.  As far a fish species around here go, you could certainly get away with something lighter.  It also depends on how deep you plan on fishing, and how often.  If you are going to fish deep a lot, you will be more likely to use more lure weight.  Just something else to consider.
