Like many other reports from the area, the fishing was slooow.  Great conditions with  very calm winds;  foggy but not pea soup;  bait near the beach.  I didn't mark any salmon and, though there were many PBs in the buoy area, only a few fish were caught.  This leads to a tough decision - I won't be going back tomorrow.   For anyone that still wants to try, I would suggest heading up the coast towards Double Point or dragging bait close the the beaches for stripers or halibut.  A local said stripers have been in the area for the last week or so.  The beach break was small but bigger than I expected.  Pay attention to the swell pattern on launch and especially on the landing.

It was nice meeting new board members (can't remember three names, how sad)  Mooch, sorry you didn't make it out to the buoy but maybe it was for the best.

On the bright side,  first tuna reports of the season are coming in.

No salmon, but it was a gorgeous day Sat., great for my first time kayak fishing!

Many private boats out there - we checked with a few and it was slow for them too.   A few drifted, most trolled, so we were paddling through lots of fuel exhaust 3 miles out.

I logged 14 miles on the water, maybe 1-2 miles of it was drifting.  The water was glassy flat at the buoy even at 2pm.  I was just exhausted when we landed and endured a double-SITE landing.  The first breaker flipped the boat over me and then under...  I was dazed on my hands and knees when the second breaker repeated the process and clobbered me again.  Some kids in wetsuits ran up to me asking if i was okay.  I am sure it was hilarious to watch for the many people there.  I will have to keep an eye out for it on America's Funniest Home Videos.

Thanks to Scott for the training and putting up with my fatigue, and to Jonathan (fellow Oaktown homie) for a diving rescue of my sunglasses.  Owe you both beers.  Mooch and Vince I will definitely catch up with you again soon.

Ben no probs on the bait, nice meeting you.  Thanks for suggesting the lagoon launch and landing.  Next time I will probably do just that!

It's a bit early now but that spot will be a great place to fish in July-Sept.  Hope to fish with y'all there again!

I say, always kick a man when he's down. I know that I paddled out further than you did, and trolled farther but my GPS only marked about 12.5 miles. It was all that zig-zaging you were doing. You'll get out on the water more and learn how to keep it going straight, it just takes a little time.

Also, you need to bring more water. That dehydration was what was killing you at the end.

Good day on the water - even if I only had two kingfish to show for it. Speaking of which, I know I've seen kingfish in the Asian markets. Are they any good to eat? Maybe a hull full of kingfish and sandsabs would be a good way to salvage a skunky day.

Regards,
Scott

P.S. - Craig - did you come with an extra piece of gear?

Oh, dude, I have your knife, yeah!  I remembered earlier but not when I posted.  For sure I'll get it back to you...  I have my own knife - I just need to bring it and give you yours back.

Thanks for that!

Maybe next weekend when we rockfish?  I'll keep an eye on the hookups board.  Hope you had a good day!

Fillet the kingfish.  Hold them up to the light to find and remove worms (or just fry their asses.)  Nothing special, but as good as any other "white fish."  I batter and bread the fillets.  Bodega next week?  :smt005

Would love to check out Windrider's spot or anywhere you like Jonathan...  I would like to try a RC/Salmon combo...  hunt rock cod early and scan radio for a hot salmon bite nearshore for after RC.

Whaddya think?

Hey guys!

Sorry Vince and I arrived late - as you already know- we got lost  :smt011

Well, besides being late and holding up the crew - really very sorry about that! Our morning did not start out so good. Vince and I dropped our yaks off the ramp leading to the beach and as we drove up the lot to park, an old timer came by and told us that there was a lady with a stroller who could not get through the ramp on the beach because our kayaks were on the way....so Vince and I apologized - repeatedly - and the old timer went on and said "you guys should more considerate and start thinking of others next time" - his exact words. So we got our wetsuits on and hustled to the ramp - just about 50 yards away. I looked around to see if the "lady in the stroller" was still around - this was just about 5 minutes after the old timer gave us a "talk". I even looked around the beach and did not see a soul.

So, Vince and I carry our yaks down and the surf was almost like Linda Mar on a big day but it was a shore break (similar to Bean Hollow)This was Vice's first beach launch -  so Vince and I took the time to figure out the sets and we finally got a window - I launched ahead of him and got past 3 breakers - I looked back and Vince is sideways - and as soon as I looked in front of me, the 4th wave hit me HARD. I tumbled back and thankfully I LEASHED both rods. None of us lost gear but felt very defeated  :smt011 We moved our launch spot a little further North and found a better window and got out successfully. As we were paddling out, we saw the Happy Hooker (party boat) fishing in 20 ft. water - sandy bottom. There were pelicans working the area so we decided to hang around and trooch. We followed the baitfish that were popping on the surface and I got a solid hook up "HULI KA!!!" I reeled up and it was HEAVY - I could only guess that it was a halibut. Half way up, my line wet limp  :smt013 LOST IT!! Vince had a few taps as well but that was it. With so much bait in the water we thought we were bound to hook up with something but, we called it off by noon and headed back - this time, we landed the yaks gracefully :smt002

As we were loading up the yaks, a groovey park ranger drove by and told us about the shark sighting the day before  :smt009 Apparently, the land lord was chasing seals just 20 yards from the beach  :smt118

The ranger was actually a kayak fisherman and divers as well - so we told him about our site - hope he chimes in soon.

By the way - the ranger confirmed the roumor that Vince and I heard from another local: the street signs that lead to the beach are often "taken out" by the locals to keep visitors away.  :smt011

Vince and I salvaged the day by having lunch at LL in South City  :smt045 You guys have to try the Chicken Katsu = GOOOOD STUFF :smt023

glad to see you got a taste of Dux h2o If the break is bad where you launched there you can usually find better either up the beach or at the mouth

The pb might have been after halibut, I've seen them nail them in there but seems a bit early?

ya what a day! I made a big mistake by not tying my drybox to anything, I had my car keys, and my cell phone in it. I broke through the first wave, and my drybox fell out, I looked back for it, and all of a sudden, I see a big wave in front of me, I yell "OHH S#!+" and and im in the water, Joel turns around to see what happened to me, and then he gets over turned. If I had strapped everything down, it woulda been all good, but I made another newbie mistake. My bad Joel!
