I want to take the family to enjoy Yosemite in the winter but the lodging prices inside the park are prohibitively pricey.  Can anyone suggest an affordable alternative that's not too far from the park?  We would like to ski badger pass one day and spend another chillin' in the park.

thanks,
Nate

Last two years we have stayed at Cedar Lodge just outside El Portal. Reasonable priced, clean, comfy, full bar and restaurant, relatively short drive up and in to the Valley.

Year before that we were at the Bug Hostel in Midpines, which was still really cool.

Feel free to PM me if you want more details. We'll be up there again for our annual trip in 2 weekends!

The camp ground is open. If you have an RV, it's very inexpensive.  Maybe borrow one or rent one?  We go 3 or 4 times a year and winter is best I think.  Head over to the Awahnee Hotel Sunday morning for the buffet brunch.  Bring your bikes and ride all around.  Best way to see things and not have to walk every where.

To get you in the mood, here are some photos when we went the week before Thanksgiving;

Bridge near the campground

Yosemite Falls through the clouds on the way to brunch

Sunday Brunch.  Everything from Prime Rib, New Zealand mussels, Crepes', of course eggs any way you want them, and breakfast meats of all kinds.  Then dessert and coffee....

More coffe and the Sunday paper by a BIG fire place.

Afternoon tea and cookies on Friday when we arrived.

find someone who works for PGE who will hook you up with one of the company cabins at Wishon Cove.  Right on Bass Lake, outside of Oakhurst by about 10 miles, good access to Yosemite southern gate.  its like 70 something bux a night for a decent 2 or 3 BR cabin with kitchen, real cheap.  BYO linens.  And food too, cuz ain't nothing open or available in the area this time of year (other than the lodging)

and i'm w/ skipro.  late fall and winter are my fav time at yosemite.  deserted, and beautiful.

Check this out. Looks like a pretty good deal from Bass Lake...
