In addition to great photos, I may have also brought back malaria from Ecuador. I got tested while in Quito because I was showing symptoms (which promptly went away). The test just came back positive yesterday, so I went to Kaiser and got tested again and it came back negative. Can malaria go "dormant" in the body, resulting in false negative test results? I've asked the doctors all these questions, and their information has not left me satisfied, as I suspect most people in the U.S. have little experience with this disease. The treatment for malaria can have nasty side effects, so it's not something you want to take on a hunch.

Any input that might be of use here?
Thanks!
Andrew

I should also add that I've had a painful sore throat since I got back which shows no signs of going away.

That's the thing. I was kinda hoping the Kaiser test would come back positive, so I could do something proactive like get treated. Instead, I have one test showing negative and another test showing positive, so I have no idea what's going on.
Thanks for the positive thoughts though  :smt001

Don't you usually get shots ahead of time so you don't get it.  When I went to Guatemala I got shots to prevent things like that.  Hopefully its something  that can be easily taken care of.

Andrew, I don't have any advice other than be very very vigilant. If you feel anything out of the ordinary get checked immediately. You should be ok because of your general health and fitness. It can hit like a bulldozer some time afterwards.

I think the key word there is "Kaiser."  I wouldn't be surprised if they gave you a pregnancy test by mistake.

Hope they were right this time brother.

Just talked to the doctor, who said that the type of malaria found in Ecuador does not relapse, and that I should consider myself cured, as I was taking a treatment of malaria pills at the time. She said that unless more symptoms show up, I have nothing to worry about.

I agree that Kaiser can be sloppy. I've been misdiagnosed by them several times. I'll keep an eye on myself.
Thanks!
