I ordered up the plans for the Pygmy Goldeneye. 15'8" x 24" beam. Going to really try and do a SOT conversion.  The boat is a really strong tracker. Just the ticket for trolling and returning in crap conditions from a long day out. Probably no joy at all to paddle though.

Cool even if it is not fishable I am sure it will be beautiful!

I talked to the guys at Pygmy a few weeks back at the Puget Sound Sea Kayak Symposium.  Alas, they don't have any plans for a sit on top.  We did brainstorm a bit about converting one of their designs by just opening up the cockpit.  It's nice to see someone is going to try it.

Hunh?! A Pygmy not enjoyable?

My experience is that they paddle like a wet dream.  :smt002 It will seem like a feather, compared to an SOT that weighs almost double.

Enjoy!

I used to build stitch-n-glue boats for a (small) living. Feel free to send me a PM or e-mail if you have any questions. Trickiest part will be figuring out the level of the seating area, so that it's above the waterline (and draining), without being so high it makes the boat unstable.

Leah's dad lives near Pygmy...I saw them on our honeymoon and fell in love way back then.  Good luck! They are sweet ass boats!

It's going to be a working boat, not a beauty boat. I'll probably use colorant in the epoxy on the bottom of the hull at the very least, maybe over every thing. The bottom of the hull will be sanded fair, but probably not the deck.

I've fished and hunted in hulls that are much less suitable, so it will definitely fish.

Wacky ideas that are being seriously considered are:

Seat just below the waterline for good COG. The plywood under the seat will actually drain slightly forward, while the paddlers butt actually sits on a raised minicell platform that is canted slightly to the stern, for comfort.

No scuppers. Not just scupper plugs, but no provision for scuppers whatsoever. Instead, install a small 12V electric bilge pump. (Aussies and Brits have had good success with this in their SIK's). Because of the nature of the boat construction, scuppers will be an easy retrofit, should they prove necessary.

A "real" through hull transducer, in a recessed well. Honestly, I really did think of this while looking at the Humminbird FF page a month ago, and not just after I saw the pics of the Prowler 4.5

Hinged hatches in the cockpit, well above waterline. To allow for rods to go in, with tip of rod to the rear, and largish fish to go to the forwards under deck area.

Just goofing on some cockpit layout ideas:

As for "no joy", I was thinking about it's utter lack of manueverability. But it'll track like a TOW missile, and be darn quick too boot. But still, not "joyful" in the way that a highly rockered, hard chine boat is joyful.

And I'll be in touch. I'd really like to find a good local source of BS 1088 ply, that doesn't want one of my gonads.

Piscko Sicko,

Can you recommend a local source for Okoume ply ? McBeath Hardwoods wants $51+ tax for 4mm BS1088. Almquist has Meranti BS1088 at $25.60 + tax, but I have to get it down to the Bay Area from Blue Lake. Mintons in Mountain View doesn't have Okoume in stock, but figured it would be around $60-70 per sheet.

I can get Okoume BS6566 from Noah's, delivered, for about $40, if I get 10 sheets, but I'm not sure if I want to deal with buying enough ply for 3 boats at once. Add another $100 if I get BS1088 from Noah's

I'm waiting on quotes from Allied Veneer.

Regards,
Scott

Bill, it works for surfboards! foam is the future!

And I have to say, I'm like 3rd or 4th loon around here, no question!  :smt003

Of course, this comes out after I've committed $$ to the Goldeneye plans.

This would be an easy boat to stretch out a foot, foot and a half. And even easier to modify the deck plans to whatever you want

I kind of hope you will add some bulkheads to minimize the water from going everywhere, maybe some hatches also. I live in Alturas and was looking art Nexas boats for the halibut hauler and they have a source for ply but are in WA.
i got to say that that kayak would look good with outriggers and a sail from fastyaks, but they went out of business.
