I personally have seen some pretty nasty stuff. Videos meant to desensitize soldiers before going into war, and fighting in that war (you get the point).

As sad as those things are I feel as though they have made me a more humble person, they have helped me be a better person. As such I feel now that I am a part of this world rather then just in it.

Earlier I posted a video of some inhumane actions. The thread has been removed by me after some comments. However it got me wondering how we as Americans view... essentially death.

I kind of got a "Bury our heads in the sand" vibe, but I could be wrong thats why I am asking how do you take, or whats your view, on images/videos of death.

Normally death doesn't bother me, although truth be told, I've haven't experienced it a great deal in my life.

Having children, and working with them on a daily basis though, make it hard for me to deal with atrocities related to our youth - and thus my reaction to your posted video.  Certainly no offense meant.

I am the type of person who reads controversial books. I try and find subject matter that is against my views. I listen to conspiracy theories. I see images and videos of real atrocious things.

Personally I feel as though it gives me perspective.

Certainly no offense meant.

No offense taken.

It takes alot to offend me.

That'a a huge question, one that many of us would feel compelled to write a long response to (maybe).  For me I'd have to say that my opinions and view have changed greatly over my adult lifetime.  The things that have probaly changed my view are, life experience, being in a room when someone died, seeing a death in a racing accident, having kids, being older and giving more thought to the world around me rather than just trying to get thru it. My exposure to death has been pretty minimal for my age.  As for inhumane activities in general, they tend to bother me now more that ever.

Huge question.

I commented that I had rather not watched the video.  I hunt and fish a lot. I have always put my own and some other peoples' pets out when the time comes. I have also seen some fairly gruesome things involving humans,  accidents and what not.  You can categorize them into; "prepared to view" or "not prepared to view". Accident's, etc.would fall under "not prepared". Some things are necessary like ringing a ducks neck, slitting a writhing deer's throat or cutting a fishes gills. I have had to shoot and bury a few old pets over the years and that really sucks and it isn't pretty or fun. Killing period isn't fun.
I was not prepared to view the video you posted, nor do I seek those types of videos out. I don't think you are bad for bringing attention to what humans are capable of.  I would have liked a warning prior to something like that so I could have either been prepared or to have skipped it and finished my coffee. No bad feelings here. :smt004

Growing up in a "ranch" type atmosphere, we were always subjected to harvesting of animals for food.  I grew up as an active member in the 4-H and local county fairs where we learn the values of raising farm animals for food sources and the best ways to yield the best possible meats.  These types of things didn't bother me as I aged.  About 4 years ago I was faced with my dad being diagnosed with Terminal cancer.  I was able to spend those last 2 years with him, continuing to work on fun projects and such.  The hard time came that last week where I was able to spend every moment possible with him at home.  The last few hours just him and I as I watched the cancer take over his brain 100% and finally the last breath & heartbeat as I sit at his side.  It's as vivid today as it was some 2 years ago ...

The moral, you can "prepare" yourself for these situations but they are never REALLY the same until you are 100% involved or invested in them.  Looking at the level of media coverage, access to information through the WWW, and such, I believe WE continually desensitise ourselves to the point that it becomes commonplace to see awful acts.  I fear for how far we have come and more fearful for how far it will go for our kids.  Is this act of desensitization leading to these growing trends in society?

Tough subject for sure and I agree with the tendency in American culture to bury the head in the sand when it comes to seeing real things like human suffering or death.

I wasn't necessarily anti-war when I served with the Marine Infantry but upon seeing a Marine loose an arm in an IED attack, on line, my opinion changed instantly. Maybe it was the fact that I used to be one of the guys in the video or that I had trained for the scenario and thought that I may have been prepared. Now I am fully against war of any kind especially the kind we are fighting now.

Since that video I have watched nearly every major combat related video from Syria to WWI and I still yell at the machine gunners to get their guns firing. I still feel a deep sense of loss when anyone on our side is hurt and that will never go away.

Watching these clips did not desensitize me it had the opposite effect. I was alerted to what war was really like and what a twenty something year old sounds like when he just lost that which never can be replaced. To me desensitization is accounting for the wounded and dead through a sanitary statistical report that doesn't include things like a huge explosion and blood curling screams.

Nowadays I watch it all including some things I wish I could un-view. Lots of keywords come to mind in that category but if you want to know what I mean by un-seeing something find the vid of the narco chainsaw incident. Still can't do the puss vids though. :smt009

My .02
I did not see the video but based on the comments in this thread I get the gist of what it was about.
There is a time and place for everything.
There are different forums on the internet for everything too.
I come to NCKA to read about kayak fishing, diving, crabbing, hook ups, events, food, and things along those lines.
I come here to get away from everything else.
I come here to have fun, laugh, keep up on how my NCKA friends are doing and keep in touch with them.
It doesn't mean I'm burying my head in the sand or that I am not aware of atrocities that occur worldwide as well as in our own backyards. It is beyond my comprehension how anyone can treat another in such a cruel manners.
Having said that, I don't come here to view it nor do I want to.
