Just got back 2 rods I have had since the late 70s. Sabre 196 and a 270 that have both been re wrapped twice since I got them as a teenager at Yo,s in Gardena in 1977. How I remember? They were marked. man the fish I caught on them. One of them the 270 I have caught I am sure a couple of TONS of Albacore both Commercially on pick bites on 30 lb not to mention all the Calico Bass on Brown Baits and Rubber. Also I would venture to say 300 + Yellow tail and Numerous Barracuda. Also a 48 lb Halibut at Santa Rosa Island as a 19 year old.  The 196 I remember fishing in my Skiff of Redondo on the Canyon Drop off by Topaz Jetty (14ft skiff and 10 Horse Johnson) Towing a bait sled behind prying the weather would be good because a Few Bluefin were caught along with a rare mix of Salmon. YES SALMON.  I caught 2 16 lb Bluefin and 2 12 lb Kings on the Anchor in front of Topaz Jetty. Wish we had Digital Cameras then. To top it off I drifted the beach in 10ft of water and caught a 10 lb Halibut. Live bait fishing with half a scoop in tow. The sport Boat city of Redondo had 23 Blue fin and I think 30 Salmon next to me with 30 people on board.
So in these thoughts of the rods I got in the mail From Takas Tackle in Anaheim  that put a lot of fish on the boat in my life and never broke or failed a Salute to life and the joys of fishing. I used to work with Takas Son on the New Hustler 2 as well as pin head on Takas boat when I was say 14.
Long winded here but sentimental.

So are old rods worth rewrapping?  I wondered if over time the rod itself would break down to heat, UV light and time.

I would not know about that. But mine lasted through many years in the  rack on the sport boats as well as skiffs I fished on. Maybe the older glass is tougher than some of the newer stuff?? I still fish with mostly older rods that have been refurbished. As far as cost . For a quality wrap about 175.00 for triple wrap nice seat and nice guides.  For me it was buy a rack rod for that or keep what worked for over 30 years.  Heck I will be dead by the next time I need it done again. Yes Squidders are a tough reel. Used them a lot in the day and they still are great with a Aluminum spool kit. Rock solid reel. I did clean the fishing pole after each use with a minimum  of a rinse of fresh water with a wipe down again with a rag.

Those old Sabre 196 and 270's were made by the man who now makes
Cal Star. I have the 196 and 270 of the Cal Star's. Glass rods should last for years.
