I've been working on a way to fish San Luis for awhile, I've tried in the past but the wind just got to be too much. So I finally think to try new area to launch, on the upper end of the lake. Then I read in the Modesto Bee a sad article, just this last week a ranger found an empty boat trailer in the parking lot. They searched the lake and found one guy (no pfd, but alive) floating on some debre, they find out one more man and a 16' boat are missing.

When the winds come up on that lake, it can be just as dangerous as any Ocean.

Wow that is sad. You really have to be able to pick the day on that lake.

Any word on how the forebay is producing these days?

almost more dangerous cause it's hard to take a lake seriously. But that is is one gnarly man made puddle.

I remeber being on the lake as a kid with my dad, in a old wooden 12' with a 10hp outboard and wondering why he never went across the lake. We always stayed close to shore. The older I get the smarter my dad was/is.

My PB  friends haven't been going out, but one hit check 12 off the bank and caught 2 legal Strippers last week.  (Anchovies)

This is exactly why my PFD is loaded with safety features - I know some people on this board give me a hard time because of all the safety gadjets that  I bring with me - when we are kayaking, we are always dealing with everchanging weather conditions, it's always better to safe than sorry.....especially if you have loved ones waiting for you at home  :smt045

Good for you Mooch. I have flares in my life jacket too, along with some dye and a marine radio. The ocean can change in a heartbeat, I think a lot of people dont realize how quickly it can turn nasty. I found that when I first started kayaking that its a fine line in between fun and dangerous. I like to push the envelope sometimes, but it has backfired on me before. Live and learn.

I just read (in this mornings SJ Merc, I think) that rangers found the second guys body 300' down next to the boat.

People die EVERY year on the big San Luis Res.  Gotta be safe out there...
