here's what I've been using for years....it fits throught the scupper holes. IMO: The combination is better cause you don't have to worry about hiding or even losing the key. It's also long enough to secure 2 or 3 kayaks.

ACTION...THE CABLE SLIDES THRU THE LOCK. IT IS INFINITELY ADJUSTABLE. 3/8" CABLE LENGTHS AVAILABLE ARE 4' 6' 8' 12' 30'.WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS ONE COMPARED TO THE ONE MOOCH USESIS THAT YOU CAN PULL THE CABLE TIGHT AND THEN LOCK IT.  CHECK IT OUT...HTTP;//WWW.MASTERLOCK.COM/PROMOS/PYTHON

Cool... a combination cable lock looks like the ticket for me.  It would suck to lose a key.
I'll probably get the 10' model so I can lock up two or more kayaks together on a beach at Elk.  It's worth it to not have to hump it back up that hill more than once.

Do you think the cable would slide thru the hubs of the Roleez wheels?  So I could lock them on land. I'd guess they are 5/8 to 3/4" dia.

Never mind - I see it goes double thru the scupper hole.

Maybe I should consider buying a lock too. I hear the hill is pretty bad, if you dont have a cart your screwed.

I just got a Kryptonite brand cable lock similar to Mooch's at Sportmart for 19.95, a few bucks cheaper than the one at REI.

I use a bicycle coiled cable lock through the scupper hole.

It isn't gonna stop a serious thief, but it will stop opportunity theft.
