Heading over to Trinidad (or?) on Saturday. Anyone else heading out in that direction?  :smt006

According to this site, http://magicseaweed.com/Patricks-Point-Surf-Report/300/  winds will pick up some about noonish

 Sat 08/12    6am    3-5ft          5.5ft    10s    312.3°    6 7 mph       Mostly Clear    46°f    100%
   Noon    4-6ft          6ft    10s    314.07°    13 17 mph       Overcast    54°f    100%
   6pm    4-6ft          6.5ft    10s    315.33°    9 13 mph

Ultimately, with any outing, if when standing at the shore's edge it is beyond my personal comfort level to kayak crab (kayak angling, diving, etc), I am aborting.

I understand there will be about 6+ of us who are going to be looking at the water at 8am tomorrow.  Most likely, we will be on the water!  We'd love to have you join us.

I totally respect Brandi's take on it and I like knowing that such nearshore forecasts exist, but I don't use them.  For me it's all about the NWS forecast:  .SAT...N WINDS 15 TO 25 KT.  It's very true that Trinidad is likely to see at least some level of calm in the morning on the day of such a forecast - and it could well be flat calm all day - but it's also true that this forecast could represent 15 to 25 right in your face as you try to get back in to the launch.  It's amazing how strong a north wind can funnel through the parking lot/Trinidad Beach area and right into the harbor.  Anyway, I don't want to discourage your energy for going, but watch out for going even though there's a SCA - Small Craft Advisory.

We are taking a pass and plan on coming over 299 tomorrow and plan on getting out crabbin g somewhere on Sunday. Watching the wx reports from here did not encourage us to take the drive. So, tonight is wife and family time with a nice glass of wine. Cheers! Hope to see everyone soon. :smt001

From what I read there were several kayaks that got out this morning with Brandi.  They got their limits, but the wind came up when they were coming in.  Im curious to hear about the folks that planned on a noon run.

Anyways, tomorrow there is a crab tournament being put on by Greg of Pacific Outfitters.  The tourney cost $25 and the money goes to a local Veteren's charity.  There are prizes for biggest crab and heaviest limit.  There will be a crab boil at the Veterens hall in Eureka at 4:00

Come join the fun.  You can sign up on the beach.  See ya'll tomorrow.

Thank you Eric, thank you.  Eric points out something important as we need to consider all aspects of the conditions, both inshore and offshore, when making a choice to get out onto it.

In my experience of Trinidad, if its not blowing when we arrive in the morning, we usually have a window till about 10 - 10:30am before winds start.  Not always, but usually.  As was the case today.  We could almost set our watch for 10am when the winds began - and as Eric noted, it came from the launch.  Fortunately, we were just finalizing our limits and the wind was very manageable to paddle into when we were paddling in. At least twelve of us were out there this morning.  There were LOTS of bouys out there and not sure if that was the reason it took a little longer to pull our limits, but we did!

Good call Dave, tomorrow will be nicer and you will have lots of company in Trinidad with the Crab Tourney going on.  I believe there is a separate thread on it if you are interested in joining in.
