HI i was thinking of a set up for trout and bass fishing on a budget that i can use from shore and kayak:

7' ugly stik lite ultra light action
or
7' ugly stik lite medium action
with pflueger president 6930 or 6935?
which set up to get?

also im planning to go fishing on a party boat around catalina island in May. i was thinking of a set up that can be used for crabbing off pier, fishing on party boats for small tuna and yellowtail and rockcod, use it on a kayak for striper and halibut?
7' ugly stik tiger medium action
or
7' ugly stik tiger lite medium action
with Penn 650ss or 750ss?
which setup to get?

I use 2 Ugly Stik Ultra light casting for all trout fishing from kayak. They both have a Daiwa Millionaire reel. I use a Tiger med light 7' paired with a Shimano tr200g or Penn GTi320. The medium seems too stiff for my liking. My PB on that is a 21lb Salmon. Tried for WSB also with no luck. I was hoping that set up would work when I hooked up.

I heard the ugly stik lights are a great rod for the price. The Pfleugar president reel is a great reel too. I have the 6940. I use it for striper bait fishing and also caught leopard sharks with it big as 52in. Its smooth and i would recommend it. Probably want a smaller lighter one for bass and trout though.

If you are looking at fishing Catalina in may, I think you are going to be under gunned with the Ugly Stick Tiger in the medium lite and would go with the medium or even the medium heavy if they have it.  As for reels the 650ss probably doesn't have enough line capacity and you may be pushing it on the 750ss.  I wouldn't fish below 25lb test if that is the only rod you are taking on the cattle boat....a better option is 30lb and you may put some spectra backing to give you more capacity.  You have a good shot at some homeguard YT as well as WSB during that time.  If you can fish conventional get a Penn Jigmaster 500 and spool that with 30lb and you should be set.

When I fish Catalina during that time I usually take 4 setups ranging from 15-40lb depending on whats biting.

For a party boat spinning rig I would go with the medium and an Okuma Epixor bait feeder 80 with 50# spectra backing and 30-40# top shot.
The okuma is $80 on amazon.

The Okuma Expior reels are great. I use a 20 size for just about everything, spooled with 25lb power pro and a 6' top shot. I have abused that set up too. Fished salt only for 2 years with no servicing just a quick FW rinse. I also use a cardiff 400 with 50lb braid backing and 100yrd top shot. Jigmasters are good for the price and they say if you can cast one you can cast anything.

i will definately have the check out more detail on the okuma epixor.
the reason why i was planning on pairing the ugly stik tiger or tiger lite with the penn 650ssm is because i already have one at home. its worked very well in the past and im sure with a bit of lube it will be back to new.
i know it will be heavy when i pair it with the tiger lite it being 10oz and probably perfect for the ugly stik tiger it being 18oz
but is having a rod butt heavy that bad? i know the tiger lite medium can definately handle yellowtail that i will be catching in catalina.

I would use the 650ss if you own one. I used a Penn 5600 Live Liner with 25# test Mexico offshore in September against 30-40# albies and it was a blast although it took some time to land them and on a party boat, it might have gone bad. I really like Penn spinners but the Okuma is a better value.

I like a Med Lite rod for all around use, light is fine for small creek fishing.

As far as trout go, I've caught 5 lb'ers on ultra light gear. I have a much better hook up ratio on light gear. I caught my 21lb King on medium light US Tiger. I just caught a 15lb cat on my medium bass rod and 10lb line. If you know how to hook and fight fish, lighter is better all around. You will catch more fish I believe. For small creeks I use a longer rod than I do on a boat. Keeps me away from the water so fish don't get spooked as easy. Just my opinion.

with bass I just dont think I get enuf rod power-too much flex- with a lite to set the large hooks thru the tuff bass lips, but to each his own for sure. Lite does work well with trout.

I use medium for bass, except for a-rigs or top water in the weeds. Then I use MH. It also depends on manufacturer. One companies rod will differ from another even if rated the same.

You can use a bass rod to catch trout for sure!  A 7' Med Heavy spinner setup is a good all around choice for tossing/trolling crank baits, texas worms, flinging trout bait, etc. But like others have said, a lighter weight setup for trout is a lot more fun.  A 5' Uglystick light combo only runs 30$ or so and is perfect for me for tossing bait, trolling, jigging, bobber fishing, etc.  Then I usually troll a crankbait on a bass rod at the same time as trolling say a dodger and worm on the UglyStik.   :smt002
