I did both my ab card and my sturgeon card, all you need is to have them in hand and follow the prompts.  Your "GO ID" is on each card, not just your license.  With that said, I think it's easier to just mail it especially if you have allot to report.  You need to get a few layers deep into the licensing system to make your entries and then you need to enter everything on your card into the system (thereby putting a mailman and a DFG clerk out of a job).  Not sure how I'll do it next year.

Since my sturgeon card from 2012 is totally faded, and I have nothing to report  on the Sturgeon card it was easier to try the new internet system plus I saved a stamp; However, I agree with Dale L. If I'd have lots of info to report, I'll probably just mail it.
