Next year I plan to get off the beaten paths and try to discover some secret spots.  My question is, if I come across an interesting spot from HWY1, how do I know whether I can cross the field to access the cliff and beach?

If I'm outside of a state park, does it automatically it belong to a private party?

If I'm inside a state park, does that automatically mean I am NOT trespassing on someone's property?

Thanks a lot.

Signs will indicate if your tresspassing or not.. Just stay on the beaten path and you should be fine. You could also try to obtain A blm map from the forestry dept. Good luck and happy hunting. :smt006

Signs I know I am trespassing:

1. A Pair of oversized hungry Rotweilers are chasing me.
2. Racking of a round in a Remington 870
3. Police Officer asking me "What the hell am I doing in there!"
4. Bolt from Cross Bow goes whizzing by
5. That sinking feeling you get as you hear the hammer getting cocked back
6. The sudden thump and the pain that starts on top of your head from where the bat hit your head

Just a few things that can be indicative of trespassing

Lol to the previous gun cocking references. Seriously though, just order a copy of the California Coastal Access Guide and spend some time cross referencing with google maps. The book includes every public access point in the state for coastal viewing and water access and has lots of details about rules, facilities etc. Also I figure if the access is strictly ranching land or the road runs right up on a cliff, its fair game, even though the ranching areas might be pushing it. There is also another great website that contains continous photographs taken from low flying planes. Way more detail than google earth. I think its called the california coastal records project. Barbara streisand sued them under paparazzi laws and they won and successfully countersued. This is how I get my lay of the land. And if anybody wants to try accessing some really difficult spots I have a static line repelling gear and rope ascenders we can use. Hehehe

You can always launch your kayak and paddle as far away from the park as possible....on the north coast that'll put you into inaccessible territory pretty quick.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

to add to squidders list... the unmistakable burn of rock salt being forcibly introduced to your skin via 870 Remington... is a sure fire sign you are trespassing.
