The wife and I had fun crabbing in Tomales bay. We caught tons of babies. Only one keeper Dungeness. On my last pull I brought up 3 kelp crabs. Has anybody ever eaten one? Looks like the claws would be the only thing with enough meat to be worthwhile.

It's edible but not much meat and has mushy taste compared to Dungies and Rock Crabs.  More info below:

I thought it tasted sweat and depending on the size their legs can have surprising amounts of meat.

Are you preferred to its cousin "Spider Crab"?

IF these are the red to dark red color with smooth shells where the carapace is the same shape as the spider crab, then yes they're good eating.  They are very sweet, but the shell is very thick.  The texture is also more "stringy", but again the meat is sweeter than any crab I've eaten.

Guess he's asking about different specie of Kelp Crab.  I was referring to the specie below:

Not sure if there are regs for em. Ive found them up at the top of kelp just kayaking around in the early morning or while diving on pilings. Havnt seen them at TC but then again I wasnt looking very hard for them as I had fish and abs in my sights. Ive seen a lot in HMB and south in Carmel.
