The difference is you can swim in the farmer john but the chest waders will fill up with water. A wetsuit is meant for being submerged in the water but waders are for 'wading'. That being said a lot of people use these  http://www.campmor.com/kokatat-tempest-paddle-pants-socks.shtml?source=CI&ci_sku=76062&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}  with or without the matching jacket. With the jacket it's as close as you can get to a dry suit without buying a drysuit. But just getting the pants is a step in the right direction. They are very durable and I wear mine over the top of my FJ all the time.

That's a good price there Jim. Are they always that price at Campmor?

Seems like I've seen them there before for around that price. I think I've had mine, that I got at Claveys for about four years now.

Tempest pants are an great choice. I still use my waders in freshwater and down south in the salt. Kokatat makes some nice tall boots just for launching and landing but IMHO waders are better. Just make sure to always were your belt and a PFD. If you can spring it get the waders with a zipper. Huge plus.

I'm sure this has been posted before but here it is again. Only thing he doesn't address is the cold water we in counter up here. Sonny was in a dry suit at GS6 and still got hypothermic didn't he?

I remember Sonny writing that he did not have proper layers under the Super Nova suit. The tempest pants are pretty good in the fact that they arent cumbersome at all. You still need proper insulation underneath and in warm weather they breathe also.

+1, it all comes down to layers. A drysuit  and dry pants just keep you dry.
