So I'm new to the kayaking community and I know a handheld VHF radio is the most important item when on the water and am wondering what a good, waterproof, relable brand and model is for kayaking much appreciated -Tyler Aughney

Tyler, welcome aboard!  You've come to the right place.

As for your inquiry, use the newly remodeled search function - it will be your best friend!  Icom, Standard Horizon, and Uniden are probably the 3 most recognized brands and I may have forgotten one also.  Personally I have the Icom M88 with microphone and like it but they are expensive.

Best of luck and let us know if you have any more specific questions.

I recommend using the search feature on the upper right hand side.

+1

I like the West marine VHF's with the warranty. Because you can always return them and get a brand spanking new one
I like to have fun.......

Uniden???  You been away too long Michael  :smt044  Dont buy a Uniden, they are abouut as waterproof as a cordless phone. :smt005  Also, dont forget the West Marine brand VHF's which are fairly good, and if you buy a warranty you will be rest assured that when it croaks (and they all do at some point) you can just exchange it!  :smt002

I had a cobra that was a piece...I like my standard horizon. A word of advice. Spend what you have to in order to be safe and comfortable. Those are two places to go cheap.

Not a single problem with my Standard Horizon.  It floats, is waterproof and has tons of needed features.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

The VHF is 2nd to you wearing your PFD while on the water!
