All you need is a shortened pole spear with a slip tip on it.

It won't float and isn't as cool.  :smt003 You also need to put some umph behind it since it isn't being fired. I like the thicker grip.

That and a bang stick.

Now there's an accident waiting to happen.

Hey Mike when I went out with Sean I brought my shorty pneumatic speargun. I rigged the spearshaft break-away style to a couple crabpot floats so I could let go of it just in case

The possible loss of the gun would be way more expensive than this. Plus you just gave up your sleigh ride.  :smt044

You thrust the harpoon through the flesh. Not fire it with the band. The one I made would work just fine. Ive yet to try it on a CA hali( much smaller). But I would attach a lione and a float to it.

I'm on my way towards my own build. It will be similar, but the harpoon handle is going to be more of a kaji style (I've been watching too much Aquahunter TV :smt044)

picked up the 1 1/4" hardwood dowel, copper reducer (1" to 3/4") & 1" cap (reducer for the business end to prevent splitting and the cap to finish off the opposite end), and cable and stops.

When the home depot guy who was helping me asked why I wanted 3' of cable I had fun answering him.

I'm not exactly sure how I'll fashion the lily rod and slip tip just yet, but it will be very similar to Tote's design.
(thanks for the inspiration bruddah!)
(see! too much AHTV again) :smt003.
I am thinking SS rod and tube right now, but I'll have to see about $ vs what I find in the Piscean Artworks Research Lab (aka "the shed")

One thing is for sure, the handle is going to get sooper decorated :smt002

I was going to start building a spinning rod but a harpoon sounds like more fun. Thanks Mike!

Nice job Tote.

I need one for shelter cove, Halibut by-catch.

This design looks cool too.

Nice job Mike.  As others I have been thinking similarly.  One possible improvement I can see and is possibly evident from your video demo, perhaps cutting the back end at an angle with the far edge rounded and flared out slightly it would prevent it from backing out the way it went in and push the tip into rotation so it locks perpendicular to the flesh as intended.

If I make one I will never catch that fish so please come over when I hail you on the radio!  :smt044

This is good stuff.   :smt007

The bottom line is that as a group we have a great chance of landing a couple or a few Pac Hali's - we'll settle for one, but half a dozen is not out of the question!  The more we prepare for it, the closer we'll be to achieving it.

Keep planning for it.   :smt001

Thanks for continuing the thread guys.

Etienne, your idea for the slip tip is exactly what I have drawn out here at my office (yes, in between the notes on vendors and sales orders and government regs on my desk notepad are little drawings of harpoon plans. Fisherman to the core :smt044)

I agree that building a specialized landing tool for a certain fish practically guarantees that said fish will not be caught :smt044....but I got a bee in my bonnet to build one anyway.

And I also think that there is no real need for a plethora of such tools, but it might be a nice insurance policy for my group so there you go. I'll act as the Quequeg for my team :smt003.

and in the end, when I obsess about a fish, be it lingcod, WSB, halibut, whatever, for long enough, I eventually DO land one. So Even if this is the first of several seasons of 'hali-brain' I figure I gotta start somewhere :smt002.

Maybe I'll "just" catch a salmon instead :smt044

Ha! that was before I cleaned it!  :smt044 :smt044I've got a window AND a heater now. The little shed has come a long way from being a broken down harley storage unit. I still find the occasional allen head bolt or engine gasket when I sweep the ground around it though. Last week I found a pair of channel locks and a leather toolbelt in the leaves. Been there for at least 8 years.

My sage smudge ab shell :smt001 awesome to know it was noticed. I've only ever brought home two abs ever, so most of my shells are from my brother-in-law, who collected many over his diving career. I'll have to put up some pics of my shed in a separate thread, as I am constantly decorating/improving it. It is covered with exterior artwork and ab shells and wind chimes, but it is a very utilitarian building. Love my shed!
