I'm like Blue, if you consider those old fiberglass Mallottes to be kayaks, then I've been doing this since the late seventies.  Being a surfer in the Bay Area, I was surfing at Linda Mar one day when the charter boats were chumming stripers almost right in the surf line.  Of course, the light bulb went off and I soon paddled out there on a long board and began fishing stripers and salmon.

A few months later a guy took me out freedive spearfishing on that old wreck at south side Linda Mar (Pedro Point?) and he had this new (to me) contraption called a Royak, and I had to have one.  At that time, most everyone that had one of these "diveboards" used them for freediving.

In all the time I fished at Linda Mar (till about 1990, and not that often), I never saw another soul out there yak fishing.  I used to fish a lot at that park at frenchman's reef in Montara and do real well, but the ranger there thought I was nuts.  (Jmairy - I used to surf that flat rock island with those gnarly sealions too).

Untill I met Sean at the beach at Caspar i had no idea that a bunch of other folks were doing this.  Some of the innovations you guys have come up with are amazing - like FFs in kayaks.  I love it.

I mostly use a SP now, but I still have my old Mallote. It looks a lot like the picture Blue posted, but it's got 2 hatches.  It still works.
