I need a watch that can tell time, depth, and direction (compass).  This is for free diving, so I don't need fancy stuff like dive profile etc.

Is there such a product (hopefully cheaper than a dive computer)?

Try checking Suunto Core. I dont own one but I wish I had one. It has basically what you're looking for.  It can tell depth up to 30 ft, compass, it can alert you for storms, etc.

I picked up a copy of Ultimate Spearfishing Magazine at the Freedive Shop in West Sac recently.
It's volume 10 and they do a dive watch review.

Mares Nemo Apneist
Beuchat Mundial depth Gauge
Suunto D4
Aeris F10
Cressi Edy II
Sporasub Omer M1K1

It lists the key features, pros and cons for each.
This should make it real easy for you.

Tote's link has a pretty good summary... however, not sure you're going to find a dive watch with a compass on it.

Why would you need a compass for freediving?

There are also a few really barebones dive watch options that do the depth/time reasonably well.

FOG

Ah, I meant on a watch specifically.  I guess you could lose sight of your yak in the fog.

Compasses are always nice to have on a kayak, but I've only seen scuba divers use compasses in the water.

I got one of these.  Very compact and nice in theory, but ended up never using it.

Rob and Tote's links are great for comparisons. I guess the big question is what is your intended use for the device? As mentioned, compass while freediving (to me) is more or less useless. Are you planning to check depth while diving or after diving (in the water) or after diving when you're warm and dry?

My oceanic geo seems to work well enough for what I want. I can check depth while down as well as max depth of the last diive while resting. It also records length of dive, length of surface interval and has a dive profile you can check on the computer afterwards. If you're anywhere near Sunnyvale, more than welcome to borrow it for a weekend or two.

I own the Suunto Core. Very effective.

I have set compass bearings towards the shore multiple times and the compass worked perfectly underwater. It has alerts so you don't get off track.
