Yikes! were you in free spool or in Gear? Whats your hook set up?(ex. Double circle, Circle/Treble, double treble). What size are the hooks?

I'm no pro but i'm willing to help, since others have helped me.

I was fishing in Monterey the other day for WSB and twice my bait was picked up, clicker started going off and by the time my rod was in my hands the fish were gone.  Both times my squid was still on the hook.

So what's the trick to making them stick?

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Josh

WSB and ling cod hit the bait hard so it was probably a rockfish or halibut. As mentioned by others, a halibut trap or stinger rig with a j hook in the mantle and treble hook through the head of the squid is the most common setup. I use a fixed snell the j hook because it is a stronger knot than a sliding snell. I usually don't mix circle hooks with j hooks or treble hooks in the same presentation because you set the differently. Get a j hook where the eye is bent when using a snell knot.

Pretty sure it was WSB.  I was flylining in 125' of water off the hotel on Del Monte Beach.  Fish hit hard near the surface and ran fast but just didn't stick on the hook.  I saw several WSB caught close by.

Tried the J hook w/ treble stinger yesterday but it seemed the bite had turned off, just my luck.  Didn't see anyone bring in a fish.  That's my fourth try this year and my celebratory beer is still unopened.  I will bring it with me till I catch one!

I did pull out the sabiki while I was waiting and pulled up 30 sand dabs in 6 drops.  At least I brought home dinner.

Thanks for all the help guys.  You all are putting me light years ahead of where I would be without you!

I have no luck for wsb and halibut in the mile buoy, maybe you guys can share any secret. I was there 3 days in a row and nothing not even a bite. But been seeing some members catching like crazy, another one this morning same person as yesterday. Just a thought. Hoping to catch WSB before going back to school, next week is school. Gonna miss kayak fishing. Met couple members already. Thanks guys for letting me a member of this group.
