http://www.boatersoutlet.com/sevylorquickrelease.aspx

Picked up one of these @ Sports Authority for $0.47.  Yes, that's correct, less than a buck. It's a Sevylor quick release for releasing towables from a PB. One end solidy attaches to the towed inflatable (or kayak in this case), and there's a spring loaded hook thing that hooks up to the tow cable (I attach it to a line that runs from mid-yak and tied to the stern). Anchor line has a little ring on it to run down that rope and ready to go. I'll try to get a better pic of my setup tomorrow. No clue how long it'll hold up in SW, but it's constantly tested as I need to open it everytime to set anchor (or tie in to kelp). And at .47, it's good enough to use until I get something better worked out. Might be worth checking out your local shop in the water sports clearance area.

I'm having a hard time seeing exactly how it works.
I can see the pin pulls out, but what I don't see is how the clip for the rider releases.

Str8- I picked this one up @ the Lawrence/Stevens Crk location. There was 1 more there. I briefly checked out the one on El Camino in Sunnyvale but no dice. But also didn't look that hard.

Tote- I need to take a photo of my setup. The stock photos all include those metal U-clips with a screw in pin. Not so useful in my situation so I don't use them. The spot where there closer U-bolt is, I tie down to the yak. The location of the top U-clip is where the quick release happens. When the wire loop is pulled, the clip that closes on the top right of the photo opens up. I'll get some better photos later today.

I've thought about using these before but the problem I see is if the rope for the quick release gets tangled it won't release and you may be stuck on anchor. We used to use this same release when I was a kid for this inflatable bird thing we pulled around behind the boat. If you weren't careful it would get tangled and it wouldn't release. I would think this could be an issue on anchor in a decent current. But for 47 cents give it a shot!

Hopefully those pics work. First shot is the QR mechanism @ rest, ie closed. black string on the end gets tied to the yak. Top black string w/ the rubber tubing part is what I pull to release, and the red/black line is the line the anchor line gets slipped on to. Haven't used it with an anchor yet, but tested it multiple times over 2 days with a line tied to kelp instead of an anchor. Worked every single time but once, where the loop on the kelp line got stuck on a knot on the release line. Easily fixed and probably a non-issue with my anchor line that gets tied to a SS ring. Still might tape/shrink wrap the knot just for kicks though.

Geesh, sorry the pics are so big. Forgot to mention that the red line used in the pics is actually my kelp tie-off, not my QR line. Also, I'm trying to find ways to rig the yak w/o drilling any holes in it, hence the avoidance of typical cleats, etc.

Drill baby drill. It's just a boat. Make it the way you want it and don't cut corners trying to save the plastic.
