Glen, get Echolink for your computer.  Its also an app you can get for your iphone.  Then you can link all over with it, but yeah it won't work when you are out in the sticks of the Rubicon.

I hear you!  Thats why I dont get on the phone much either after working on them all day.

 

  There are repeaters that are accessible from Rubicon Springs, maybe not the entire trail,  It's been a few years since I've been over it.
  Tote you can buy the HAm radios, but without a license, there are those that will hound you for using it.  In worst case, huge fines from FCC if it ever gets that far.  Believe me there are those around that live for that stuff. 

I think the code test is still active for General, definitely for the extra class (13 WPM)   I "Plateaued" at 10 words per min but was able to fumble enough charact es together to to pass the code when I took it many years ago.

  Novice is no longer, it was added to the Tech class.  Code was a requirement to use 10m voice but I'm not sure if it still is.
