I felt compelled to pass on my experience over the past two weeks. Long story short I called all the local Hobie dealers. Keith at CCK (in Oakland) when out of his way to make sure I got a good deal. He communicated over the phone AND email to make the deal happen. No small feat with the growing interest in AI's and the limited numbers in the bay area.

In contrast the interaction/response I got from other dealers included...

"I don't have any, call someone else"
"What is NCKA? I guess I could discount MSRP, like $100"
"Yeah. I can't make a deal, and you'll have to pay $250 in shipping because AI's are not popular in the Bay Area"
"I am tired of people calling asking for a price, I am only going to quote FULL MSRP over the phone." But I line 100 miles away? "Well, you will have to drive 100 miles for a me to offer a deal"

Long story short....Support CCK if you can!

Oh and double kudos to Chuck for helping!
-Eric Berg

Had a similar incident with a local shop down here when looking for a rudder kit.  Still waiting for my "call back" but I guess they've forgottoen since it's been a few months now.

Took my first paying gig as a kayak instructor through CCK. I chose them because they had the best rep in the area. That was 1997.
It makes my day to know things haven't changed.

Seriously, how hard is it to give someone a quote over the phone?  Whether the sale pans out or not it seems titanically stupid to A) vent about sales inquiries and B) verbally explain your strategy for being an a-hole.

Who was it berg.....out them!!  :smt003

Keith is a good guy who does his customers right.

My first kayak developed cracks and he made sure the hull was replaced for free, no receipt necessary.

I know which store it is.  That store has always treated me well on prices.  But I think it is more of a hobie thing than a store thing.  From my understanding they're not supposed to advertise sales/discounts on Hobie Kayaks as part of their agreement with Hobie.  Same reason why I was never able to get a price of a Shimano rod over the phone from Fisherman's Warehouse.

Also, recently I made an order from Austin Kayak.  I ordered like $100 worth of stuff, but they still had to charge me $4.95 shipping since I had $10 worth of hobie accessories in my cart, when their policy is free shipping for all orders over $39.  ACK refunded my shipping charge when I complained about it after the fact, but they said they are unable to offer the free shipping up front due to their agreement with Hobie.

I am sure they have a reason for their approach. I just won't shop there....no sweat off my back I have a store (that's closer) that I like. I don't take it personal. I wish then the best of luck.

thats what im saying,"if you dont want my money ill give it to someone else".dont have the patients for customers than become a wholesaler.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it
