Plastic Welding? Scratches on hull

I just brought a used Revo 11 that has scratches on the hull.  I was thinking of getting a plastic welder from Harbor Freight.  My question is, can I use a soldering iron?  The scratches are not that deep or wide so I don't think I need extra plastic to fill in the gaps.  Any advice?

A soldering iron will work just fine. Just make sure after a couple of passes to wipe the iron with a wet cloth otherwise the small amount of plastic on the iron will burn and turn brown. You don't want this mixing in with the nice blue color. 

I would use a heat gun carefully. When the plastic starts to get hot it will have a sheen to it, take a damp rag and smooth out the scratch, rolling the raised plastic back into the void. While your at it go over the whole yak quickly and take care of all the little hairs. Again apply heat carefully, you can defiantly ruin your boat if your not carefull.

70 watt soldering iron would probably work fine, but harbor freight does sell the flat iron which would be a litte easier, costumer reviews say it works good but breaks easily if dropped

Get a torch lighter, heat it up and flatten. E-z p-z.
