So after reading Scott write up for fishing the ghost for the 3rd time, I started looking up reels with the 4- 5-1 gear ratio with 300yrd line plus capacity. There really is not many with that gear ratio( I really dont even know what this mean really "gear ratio") Im assuming the smoothnes?! anyway I started looking at shimano and found this 3 that I am interested in. I want to use this mainly for WSB and maybe halibut. please tell me what you all think of these reels, thanks in advance.

1  Talica 2
2  Torsa
3  Tyrnos 2 speed

I prefer shimano but open to check out other brands. All three is dang expensive just want to make sure I get the right one and be happy with it........... atleast for a while :smt005

Personally line capacity seems much more important than gear ratios to me.  WSB will give you a very nice long fight, but in the end horsing them in usually results in broken off fish.  Using a nice limber rod to absorbe shock from their very strong and fast runs for the bottom helps a lot.  I also prefer to use reel's with clickers, or a spinning setup so that the drag can be set very light and the fish can run on the first hit.

In all honesty line capacity and gear ratio are really less of a concern. People seem to forget we can got TO the fish. It's not like we are on a PB and we are in fixed location and need to bring the fish to us. You certainly don't need a 2 speed. I hauled in mine with an abu 6500 with braid. A little extra thumb pressure when needed. Save you pennies and buy 3 $125 reels vs a $400 2 speed. Because its a matter of time before you loose a rod/reel....Trust me!

Oh and if you want to spend money wisely get a $120 reel and have Alan Tani make your drag smooooooooth as silk for another $35. Money well spent IMHO.

Gino, Shimano TLD15 is just fine. Salmon, wsb, halibut no problem. Abu Revo Toro if you want to spend more $$ to get something light weight. I like em both. jim

My point in the article is that WSB don't usually charge the boat like Salmon so you don't necessarily need a high speed retrieve 6:1 reel. In fact, any reel will do as long as the drag is smooth. My favorite reels are a Penn 965 and Avet SX 6/4. No 2 speeds are not needed but nice to have in a prolonged fight. Line capacity is not an issue with WSB but tuna is different.

I have used an ancient penn 10 reel, a shimano tekota and a shimano calcutta 400.  All did well though the calcutta is the smoothest of the bunch.

Like Al, I like a really limber rod and use my salmon mooching rods, 8.5 feet and wippy but with a backbone.  Makes up for my mistakes as a shock absorber.
