I'm hearing some folks use flyline in their rigs but are not flyfishing, in what cases are flyline good choice to use as opposed to using mono or braid? Sorry if this topic has been covered in the past.

Are you talking about wsb fishing and people flylining squid? If so that means a whole bait but no weight.. the squid is dropped on the surface and stays pretty close to the surface, depending on drift, etc... If that's not what your talking about then I have no  clue  :smt003

Fly line means to hook your live or dead bait and let it drift on its own with no weight. Allows for the best presentation of live bait by letting it swim freely and naturally. I'm sure there a certain lines that guys prefer when flylining, but any appropriately sized line will work. Can be utilized for any species fresh or salt when using bait but is seems to be most popular to catch salt species when using multiple rods for species that cover the whole water column. I'm sure I'm not the only one but I find flylining minnows for bass in lakes and the delta to be very useful, a good freshwater example.

I don't fly line much but when I do it's squid for WSB or liver for catfish. I do occasionally fly line a senko or slug-o though for green bass.

I think the term is a reference to the lack of lead weight that you would find in fly fishing.

As said above, it means a hook and line, no weight...
With that being said, I use braid with a 6-12' fluorocarbon leader. Depending on the drift/chop/birds, I will add a rubbercore sinker at times, just to get it down a little.

^ this.
I like to use a 10-12ft piece of mono as standard, as it makes tying knots to terminal tackle easier. If I am planning to fish seabass I will change it to a 6-8ft piece of fluorocarbon. Sometimes the WSB are line shy, sometimes not. But the fluoro seems to be the choice of the real slayers so that is what I go with. Your choice of hook on the end. Sometimes I'll go with a 2 hook stinger setup, sometimes a single hook. I like owners.

if there are lots of birds around, add some rubber core weight otherwise you will be reeling in gulls.  Wonder what they taste like?  :smt003

+1  and it's no fun taking the hooks off them birds, especially pelicans.

You can also use weighted hooks if the drift is real fast.

Thanks guys I can't wait to try this Fly lining now.  I will definitely watch out for my feathered friends. I notice seals also like to follow me when I'm drifting so I'll keep an extra eye out for my furry friends as well  :smt002
