I was up there yesterday. 45 feet down. I have a down rigger on my yak.
Got one on a blue/silver rapapla. One on a super duper. One on a jointed rainbow
trout rapala. One on a cop-car needle fish. 4 on just a 1/2 worm on a hook.
Marked lots of fish on my finder.  Most were at 55 to 60 feet.

Interesting downrigger on Kayak? I need one !!!That's cool Mann good job I'm only going down TEN ft,
with diver threaded night crawler. I be out there more in October when they start busting water chasing those baitfish, trolling fly rod with sinking line. Maybe we catch up out there... Cheers

do some searching on site... there are plenty of suggestions for downrigger set ups on here.  Mine is made of an old Penn reel, some pvc, and a small pulley.  Works great, and cost me virtually nothing, as the reel was decommissioned anyway.

sure thing steph... I will need to upload it when I get a chance.  You have an outback which is awesome, so do I.  I mount mine into my forward left side molded in rod holder, so no need to drill any holes or anything.  Opposite it, i have a scotty rod holder to actually put my pole it, which required some drilling, but it was easy and watertight.  When I get around to posting rigging pics i will drop you a pm.

Thanks sigelvictory! I like the idea of having the DR in the molded rodholders, the less drilling i have to do the better. I like to keep it simple and light :)

I just went up to Outdoor Pro in Cotati, bought 2 of the little 75 dollar ones. The Scotty. It mounts right
in one of the rod holder mounts.  I have one for each side, and after much trial and error - I put the rods
crossing in front of me to the down rigger on the opposite side.

It works great - as John from Wind Toys can tell ya.  I take him some pretty big fish.  22 to 27 inch steel head from Sonoma - and 5 and 6 pound rainbows for elsewhere.
I try to keep him fed and happy so I can get the old geezer deals ...

I run a humminbird gps black and white fish finder that lets me see all the action under me.

Went up again yesterday (Thursday) got 2 19"'s and a 22"'er .. and a few smaller ones.  Seems
they wanted to be at 45 feet yesterday.  Got one on a Rapala, one on a fly, and 4 on worms behind
a flasher.

Oh .. I use a Shuttle Hawk to take the line down.  When you get a hit/or a fish, as you bring in your line the shuttle hawk comes up automatically.  I never have to raise and lower my ball unless I'm wanting to chase a fish at shallower/deeper depths.

For instance - yesterday - while at 45 feet - I spot a bunch of fish at 35 feet. Up I come and I hooked quite a few bass that way. Smallies and Largemouth.  Got a 16 1/2 inch crappie a few months ago and 2 12 1/2 inch blue gills that way.

It's a lot of fun.
