Hi All,
I'm going down to Oceano Dunes in November for Thanksgiving. I was wondering if anybody has launched from the beach there?
Is it a possible launch site, and if so what should I target? No Kelp visible from shore, so guessing it to be mostly sand. I'm a newbee
to the big blue, so what do you think?

That's a pretty rough surf it would be easier and safer to launch at Avila

I go down there alot to ride the dunes. sometimes its small surf, normally waves out a good couple hundred feet. better surfing. you should check if you can launch off pismo pier.  good luck

We also go down there to ride quads, I have never seen anybody launch from the beach. Like what was said above, the waves are good size, and go way out. That said the biggest surf perch I have caught, was from there.

Avila is defiantly an option I am leaning toward. Will be camping on the beach, and playing with the quads and a rail. So I thought I'd
see if anyone had any info for fishing the OHV Park area.

Thanks for the input, keep it coming.

I had great luck out of Avila for flatties or shell beach (launch near kayak shop) for lings and RF.  Swimbaits were the ticket for both.

Not sure when it's best, but those OHV park beaches also hold some giant barred surf perch. Light spinning rod, 3/4 oz egg sinker, 3' leader, motor oil Kalins grub, small hook... Tons of fun...

Thanks for the heads up on the Perch guys, sound like fun for me and the kids.
I'll have to check out Shell beach, Lings and RF sound good.

Shell Beach is awesome... Love kayaking/fishing that place. My preferred launch was at the end of Vista Del Mar Ave. There are stairs, but the beach launch is pretty tame unless theres a south swell.  I'd usually hug the kelp beds to the south (actually SE) of the launch. Prime shallow water rockfishing. I always had my best luck on the incoming tide.
