Above the water like in a yak a wetsuit isn't all that warm especially with some spray and wind, the evaporative cooling on the wetsuit can chill you pretty quick.  Hence allot of people add a waterproof windbreaking layer, pants and tops.  Windbreaking layers in the yak aren't useful if they arent waterproof.  If you're going to wear them over a wetusit they don't have to be "breathable" so you can get by with the cheapest waterproof ones available.

Fleece socks work as well or better than wool when wet and for some (like me) are more comfortable than wool.

On a normal day on the ocean when I'm fairly active I don't wear socks under my 5 mil boots and my feet are fine.  Anchoring up in the winter I'd wear as much as I could get on my feet and probably still be cold.

This is an old thread and drysuits have become much more popular but all the wetsuit advice is still as true as ever.

Good ideas but I still like my idea better! :smt044
