That's a monster of a fish.  Did I read that right that this one was around 2.5 times the existing record?!  I have to say that I'm glad it was released.  Records are great and should be applauded in most cases, but a fish this old of this size deserves to live on.  In my opinion the fish was hooked, fought and landed so it's the record.  Certified scale be-damned!  Even if their scale was a few hundred pounds off it still wins.

This suddenly reminds me of one of the stories my dad tells about growing up in Boise Idaho on the Snake River.  He would go out and watch these big commercial boats with electric winches and cable haul up gigantic sturgeon, presumable as big as this one, one after another.  Part of me always thought the size of these beasts was a fish story, or that he "misremembered" the real size since this was about 65 years ago now.  I sent him this article in an email entitled "you were right Dad!!!"

there are still some that big here in the good ol' SF Bay!....when they were building the new Carquinez Bridge (Rodeo to Vallejo)the depth in the middle is over 100ft., the divers would come up crying about giant sea monsters down there and they did not want to go back down. Then it was explained to them that they have no teeth and are completely harmless.
