I arrived at TC just after sunrise and met up with Tote and PescaDONo. Conditions were fair- no wind in the earlier part of the morning but it picked up late AM and summoned the whitecaps by around 1:00PM. The bite was frustratingly slow; no lings for Don or myself and after about 6 hours I had only landed two blacks. PescaDONo was kind enough to donate two of his blacks to me for dinner(Thanks Bro!). Tote went off and fished the north point. When I came over to check out how he was doing, he was livid pissed. Apparently he had hooked into two lings and lost them at the boat due to line breaks! His third ling was 21 inches. Needless to say, I think the people on shore could hear the F bombs echoing over the water.

After we pulled out boats on shore, PescaDONo went out with his float tube and pole spear to see what he might find, although I boogied outta there before I could see if he had any success.

All in all, it was good to be out on the water. Can't wait to try again.

Every day is a gift, its about the journey and the one the ones that got away.I'm sure you gave it a good try and sometimes its frustrating but still good times on the water with friends that matter. Next time...

It was pretty slow at Pigeon Point today also. Darius and I were there and picked up a few. Originally planned for Bean Hollow, but water condition were gnarly in that part.

I showed up around 6:15 to see some guy stuck in the sand at TC and working on getting his truck out. I told him I had a strap and would pull him out. He also had a strap which made it real easy as I didn't have to go into the sand. I pulled him out and as a result had a personal helper all day.  :smt044
Duke and his family were camping on the beach. He helped me unload my kayak, haul it to the water, haul it from the water back to my SUV and help me load it again.
Thinking I was going to be fishing solo it was great to see a couple of NCKAers there.
Nice meeting Don and Justin.
Wx was perfect in the morning. The weather man got it wrong.
The wind was non-existent. Unfortunately so was the bite.
The three of us headed south and I don't think anyone got bit for the first 3 hours or so.
I picked up a gopher and dink of a blue and released them both.
Then I went to the north point where I scrached another dink blue off of one of Kayote's shrimp flies.
I kept it, re-rigged w/ a 4oz. banana sinker and a 3ft. leader and a 6/0 siwash hook through the nostrils of the blue.
I kept dozing off during the drift but now and again the little blue would pump my fishing rod and snap me out of it.
Then the rod went bendo and finally a decent ling hook up.
He came up fairly easy but then made three strong runs. My newly cleaned and greased reel was as smooth as butter as he peeled line off.
Get him to the net. Net under the fish and the leader breaks. The net dips slightly forward and the 30'' ling finds it's way free.
Duke had asked me earlier if we ever catch anyhing big from our kayaks.
My reply was, "If you hear some seriousy loud cursing from the water, well, that meant I just LOST something big."  :smt044   :smt011
I'm surprised they didn't hear me at Ocean Cove as Becky's family was counting on me for the fish fry.
I re-rigged and put on a full squid. On first drop, bendo! Felt bigger than the first.
I give it my usual 3 hook sets and know I've got a solid set.
Half way up it comes unbuttoned....damn, oh well.
I reel up and the leader had broken again!!!!! WTF?
Brand new Vicious 17 lb. flurocarbon. I wanted to go stronger but that's all they had in my neck of the woods.
I checked and neither time was it one of the knots.
The first break was at the top of the leader, the second was somewhere near the middle of the leader.
This time I re-rig with 30lb mono leader and another whole squid.
Drift, drift, drift...bendo!
Doesn't feel as big but at lease this time I get it to the net.......21'' ling......You gotta be kidding me..
The wind kicked up so I called it a day.
Seven hours OTW and I didn't bring any fish back.
Good thing I brought lobster tails as plan B.  :smt002

The ling bite was off for the weekend. I caught two underlings and lost one at the boat that looked big enough. He earned his freedom. Boated six blacks. Biggest fish of the weekend was a fat canary. All I got Sunday was a Cab. Much larger sea Sunday and foggy.

Sunday I heard the party boats on the radio say the entire S.F. fleet got one salmon.

Nice meeting you Tote. If I had known you only had 17# I would have lent you a rod.

I did a little swimming to the north of the cove with the Hawaiian sling. First time with it. Saw lots of fish. I need to improve the grip on the sling. Couldn't keep it cocked for very long. Hand got tired. When ever I saw a large fish there was no time to set the spear. I think I could have gotten some nice fish with a gun. Vis was about 10 feet in places.

next time  . . .

I almost always use 17lb Stren for my leaders and have never had a fish break me off.

I hope it's not the Vicious brand, because I have 10lb Vicious on my perch/striper set-up and I kinda like the stuff.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

I used to use 17lb, but lost wayyy too many lings on it my first year or two. Just a little nick or abrasion, and you are down to like 8-10lb if you are lucky. I switched it up to 25lb, and I still lost a big fish this year when it rocked me and then busted the abraded line. No knot failures, just broken leaders. I'm on to 30lb now...........

...........so long rambling tale short I feel your pain Tote :smt044.
Ugh, the "popping off' feel of a line break is gut wrenching.

I've seen porpoises almost every time I've fished this year. Anybody ever have them grab your bait? Anchovies? Jigs?

AWESOME TIMES OTW with friends...sounds like the bite could've been better...

Don use duck tape and wrap it on the shaft where you mark fish lengths...the main one is for grip grab it like you are going to spear something than right there wrap until you have a place that allows u to grip it!!!

Plan B sounded tasty Tote....Glad you guys got out OTW :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
