I have a lumber style utility rack for my 06 Toyota.  It has 1 1/2 inch cross bars.  I was looking at the Malone Seawing, formerly Gull Wing kayak rack, bottom load.    All of the racks I have been looking at are for Yakima cross bars or Thule (small round tube or square tube).  Does any company make an aftermarket adapter?  Or do I need to break out the wire welder.  My only other option is to get the close cell foam pads and straps ( I Guess)

Thanks NEWBIE

You might not even need a rack, a lot of people just use the lumber rack and maybe a little foam. Load the kayak upside down and strap it in. I have the Thule bars but basically do the same thing, upside down load and strap it down.

If you want to add something like Land Shark saddles, then break out the wire welder. That's what I did on my trailer.
I got a square tube of steel one size bigger than what I had in the rack, cut it to about3 inches long, then cut one of the sides completely out. This way it can fit onto the bar on the rack.  Weld a couple of wings on each end and drill holes in them to line up with the holes in the saddles. Your new mount will mount from the bottom. Put your bolts thru the top of the saddles and run them thru the wings. This will clamp very nicely to the bar on your rack. If you need pics let me know.

I have an aluminium rack on my pickup with 2" cross bars.  I bought the 30" SUV pads from KFS and they work fine.  If your cross bars are 1.5" then I think regular cross bar pads will probably be okay.

The yakima ones I have bolted right to my 1.5 inch bar.  Come on over and check it out.

Thanks for all the great feed back fellas.... I bought some Thule mounts at REI.  I saved the receipt in case I steal another one of Sean's ideas...
