I recommend the Coast Guard pier, aka san carlos beach, aka breakwater.  MBK is fine but the others are closer.

All you need is 5/0 circle hooks, 25-30 lb flouro, mono will do though, bait needle, herring, and a couple 6-8 OZ weights. I used a weight slider on my main line to a large swivel. 4 ft leader to hook. Tie a good loop in the leader, use the bait needle to thread the line through the herring from the gills to the tail. Pull the line through bait and place hook in gill area. Drop down to 150-200 feet and bring up about 5-30 ft. Wait far a little tap and start to reel, when it starts to load up reel like crazy to the fish realizes it is hooked. Fight to the surface and bring a big net. I wish I had 8 OZ because the current was strong and hard to get vertical. Good luck Tony. Try by the red bell bouy first. Outside away from shore, inside is mpa.
