Any suggestions on colors for halibut in the ocean, say SC or Capitola. I keep hearing that white is a good color. But I can't seem to find white swimbaits. Only glow Bighammers. I also hear that purple with black back.
I've never caught a halibut on a swimbait, or any artificial for that matter, and would like to try this year.

they seem to hit iron too. mooch caught one that way last year, I caught one, potto caught 'em on krocs.
I'm sure the basic black and purple chovie fishtrap and white and blue fishtraps are good, darker for deeper,
and lighter for shallower?

the halibut catching god, todd c, the cobra fishing guy seems to like 1.5oz heads, 5inch bodies, anchovy colors.

the trick I'm sure is tossing them where they are when they are hungry!

Thanks.
Would 7inch swimbaits be too big?

I guess I'll just have to try out a bunce of colors till I catch one. Then it'll only be cuzz I was at the right place at the right time regardless of swimbait color...!?

I've tried boucing bottom with a 3oz kroc in about 40 ft. of water last year a few times and came up empty handed. With and w/o squid strips...

Getting the bait in front of a hungry fish is issue #1 of course, then the action has to be good, then I think the color has to be reasonable (the fish has to be able to see it), and of course the presentation has to be good. I think scent plays a role but not as big as people think. What I mean by that is if a lure smells bad (like covered with sunscreen) you are going to repeal a lot of fish but picking between achovy over sardine over crab scent isn't going to make that big of a difference IMHO. I like this article on color:

http://www.fishontario.com/fishing/salmon/article.jsp;jsessionid=HBLFCGKNGEGN?content=20051202_125203_4404&page=1

BTW action can be enhanced by sound, you want to get the fish to notice your lure.

Also those steps above sound long but most predators make those decisions very quickly. There is some video of salmon coming after a trolled herring and you can see them rush up and turn at the last moment cause they didn't like something, then one finally comes in and nails it. I am always thinking why those first few fish pulled back...
