My father and I headed out to Stillwater Cove today to do some Rock Cod fishing.  We got on the water at around 8am and fished until the wind picked up around 1130am.  Right off the bat the morning looked promising with a few small black and yellow rock cod.  We ended up fishing on the north side of the cove and a little around the northern point.  My father and I ended the day catching 6 smaller rock cod which we released.  Oddly enough I also managed to hook a sunstar off the bottom.  We were fishing rock cod feather jigs and diamond jigs topped with squid.  We also met up with a spearfisherman on our way in who had speared limits of blues around the northern corner of the cove.  It was definitely great to get on the water today.

Living in Santa Cruz I would love to do some more local fishing instead of driving down to Pebble Beach so if anyone wouldn't mind showing a newbie around send me a message.  I've tried kayak fishing quite a bit through Capitola and the kelp beds outside of 38th and Pleasure Point with minimal luck.  I'd love to try fishing Davenport or further up on the Westside but would rather not fish by myself.

Thanks,
Robert

Way to get out with the old man. Nothing better than fishing with your Dad. Every time my Dad asks me to go fishing I try to make it happen.

I'll be heading out of the SC harbor at dawn this Friday if you'd like to join me. I'll be targeting halibut and whatever else happens to bite. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Thanks for the help everybody.  I definitely couldn't pass up a chance to fish with my Dad.  He was up visiting from San Diego so I borrowed a kayak and PFD so I could take him out.  I grew up with my Dad taking me out of San Diego and introducing me to the thrill of fishing for yellowtail, yellowfin and bluefin so it was nice to show him how much fun shallow rock cod fishing could be.  It was a beautiful day on the water even without catching the lingcod I was looking for.

That is one of the nicest places in the county.  Are the golfers and security guards pro kayaker?

I've fished there several times and haven't  had any problems with security or golfers.

No problems there ...  Just be sure to park near the hedgerow and leave the spaces near the stairs to load/unload.  The restroom(s) feature a shower as well.
