I recently bought a "factory second" kayak from a local kayak store and while i was install my fish finder i saw this on one of the sumps. Is this a structural damage or is it okay to have something like this?

looks like a repaired crack, maybe someone who has repaired a crack can tell you how it holds with use.

Take it back.  No way can they sell you a boat with a structural repair like that and not tell you about it.

Buying local is important. Let the store have a chance to make it right. It looks to b a repair from the pics. Its hard to say exactly without looking at it for me. Clavey and Adventure sports are great places to buy.

That sure isn't from the orignal moulding!  The first picture, looks like the area has been heated.  Take it back!  If the shop is reputable, they should take it back.

The inside pic makes it look like there was a void there after the rotomolding process, not just a crack.  When I took a look inside one of my yaks with a bright light outside the hull I found that the plastic was very thin right in that spot on about half the scupper holes.

The scupper area takes allot of stress and is prone to problems on any yak.

After having a hull crack and almost sink my yak I would not keep that boat, a factory second may have cosmetic issues but that's structural and needs to be returned.

Not sure if it was a factory or a store repair, but definatley has been repaired.
I would deffinatley take it back and make the retailer aware of it.
It is poss that it was repaired at the factory, so try to be understanding if the retailer claims to not know of the repair.
I'm sure the dealer or the Mfgr will make it right.

Wasn't it bought new as a factory 2nd or "blem"?  If so, it may be hard to take it back because you are, basically, buying it "as-is" or with a much shorter warranty period, genrally speaking of course.  A 2nd or "blem" is sold, typically, for a little less because it had a flaw that was repaired, sticker missing or out of alignment, etc...  Check with the dealer you bought it from though.  A repair will generally show differently when shined with a light because it wasn't molded at the same time as the original hull.  Doesn;t always mean it isn't seaworthy, just an area to keep an eye on as more prone to cracking, leakage, etc...  Just my 2 cents having been a dealer in the past.

If it was a blem it should have been more than $100 off. If they don't help you with this I would suggest reinforcing it. Look around online I have seen some one cover there scupper tubes with 3m 5200 and have great success. My stealth 14 had a 2" hole in the bottom for the pump and it was sealed with 5200 and never had a problem so it's not a total loss.

I've bought 'blem's before from Ocean Kayak and I was told they guarnteed the boat free from structural defects just the same as a new boat.  A blem was only catergorized as a blem because it was cosmetically dammanged, not structurally.   This does look to me to be a repair job, and for what you paid for it it really should have been disclosed.

However Craig is right, maybe they didn't know anything about it until you notice it.  If thats the case any reputable kayak shop would make things right.

This actually happened to a friend of mine back when I first joined NCKA.  He had bought a kayak at a local shop, loaded it up with goodies and set out on his first voyage.  About 2 min's in he flipped over and lost all of his gear.  After pulling the boat out of the water he see there is a 2 inch gash in the rear of his yak.  Come to find out that the store was keeping that boat around just to show customers, and everyone in the store knew it had a hole in it, except this one salesman.  They were so sorry for him losing his gear that they replaced most of it, and upgraded him to a newer model boat at no cost to him.

That's what a good local shop will do for you.  :smt002

It's fully possible that it was a repair made at the factory or post-delivery.  No real easy way to tell.  Best bet is to take it back to the shop as soon as possible and discuss your options with them.
