Hi all, I am new to kayak fishing in the ocean, and I wanted to get some advice on where I should put a limit on what is safe conditions for being out on the ocean.  What is the recommended upper limit safe swell size and frequency?  What about wind speed, alone, and with swell?  Any info here would be great, and also any recommendations on which websites are good for surf predictions.  Thanks

I mostly fish Monterey Bay but this site has been good to me

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS56.KMTR.html

in general 3-6 feet is OK, wind below 15.  As you gain experience you can decide what works for you.  For me personally I will pull the plug with heavy wind, mixed swells more than just swell height.

Also the launch you choose can affect the decision.  If its a sheltered launch no problems.  If it is south facing, a south swell is a recipe for crashing.

I like the 20 point rule that Mike on USAfishing uses, basically if wind and swell = 20 or more its unsafe (ex. 10 knot wind + 10 ft swell = 20). 15- 20 pts go at own risk, less than 15 good-to-go.

Your boat handling skill level should dictate.  For me, I like calm weather (who doesn't).  If I find I'm concentrating more on the weather than the fishing, it's time to go.

Thanks guys, you make me immediately happy for joining this site, I think I went against these recommendations 2 Sundays ago down at Pigeon Point, the wind really kicked our butts, but I felt relatively safe (minus the white shark fears due to the November incident) but we still caught some rockfish, so I was happy...anyways,  I gather this weekend will be a no go because of the wind

This site has proven pretty accurate for wind and swell predictions.  It is a point-and-click map.

Also, Swellwatch has twice weekly predictions of wind and swell, sometimes they can predict fairly far out.

Some people use the under 10 rule: swell height + wind wave height less than 10 o.k., but I like the rule that includes the wind speed.

Short period (even though the heights are low) swells from a couple of directions at once are the worst for me, and I don't get motion sickness easliy.
