According to the CDPH there is no danger to California water or other agriculture as a result of the Japan quake and subsequent nuclear failures.  http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pages/radiationfaqs2011.aspx

As for this, I think the main reason for building nuclear reactors near bodies of water is that they require huge amounts of water for cooling, thus it is much more efficient to pull the water from a nearby reservoir or ocean. This cooling water is isolated from the radioactive elements so it is not contaminated. It would be quite bad if any significant concentration of radioactive material seeped into a water supply.

Fortunately California is far enough away and the ocean is quite large  :smt004
