My old man came out last week and I was really hoping to get him out on the water for the opener. Had my eye on the Thursday window, so glad that held for us. Wind was howling when we stopped at Marina SB the day before, I didn't think we were going to have much of a chance. After a good meal in Carmel  we smoked some stogies on the beach, surf was still up but wind was gone. Thursday early am he popped up, suited up and was to go before I was. Got to to SWS and met up with  Daniel (dpshim) and was ready to go in no time. I was impressed! The old man is turning 74 this month so was not sure how much sitting in the yak he could take. Thanks again John (bird) for the loaner, he dug the P15. We started near the island and started hooking up with lings right away. I released a 27 incher and I thought he was going to choke. " was that a keeper?" he shouts,"yep" I reply, "then what the hell did you let it go for" I hear back, " there's bigger" I shout back, but that was the best either of us could do. We decided to get out around the point once the early east wind died off. Tried some of the usual spots along the kelp and reefs but it was a lot quieter out there, so after a 1/2 hour orso we headed back to the cove and were greated by 5 gray whales, shallow in25 fow and in the kelp. After a short break, we stalked the cove and found a nice pinnacle in the cove, I broke off two nice fish on 30 lb braid and pops broke of one, but we managed 3 keeper lings, and then the cab bite was on with the best going 19.5. we both enjoyed some good scrappy cabby fights, SMB of the sea for their size, we stayed out until about 3:30 since conditions allowed. Great day on the water with the old man, he got me started kayak fishing over 15 years ago in some dink 9 ft sit-ins in Florida fishing for jacks in the canals near his house Cape Coral. Great visit pop, thanks for coming out  :smt006

After loosing my dad on 8-04-09 small tears well up when I read of hookups like this.  I can no longer fish my dad, others still can.  I know its a part of life,(Loosing loved ones) and I know you've probably heard it befor, cherish the time spent with your folks now! because one day, sadly they wont be around.

Thanks for all the well wishes, it was a great time! He kept asking if the fish breaking off were halibut, he really wanted to chase butts of the Channel Islands, so I simply said "maybe.." :smt003

Great story. My dad  gave me the fishing bug as a child. Wish he was still around to go out with. Keep on with yours.

Sweet report.  One of these days I'll get my old man in a yak on the salt, fishing with Family is so sweet.

I guess thats why NCKA means so much to me, as my bio-family all lives 2200 miles away, but my NCKA Fam is all around   :smt003
