Hey guys I really want to dive the opener in Mendocino for a shore dive. Im thinking Buckhorn cove which has some nw and sw protection. What do you think about the WX? Want to see what you guys think about the WX prediction is it divable? I feel like Ive dove in big swell before just dont think it was a 10 ft swell.  :smt120

Sunday: NNW wind 9 to 15 kt. Mostly sunny. Mixed swell...WSW 10 ft at 14 seconds and SSW 2 ft at 16 seconds. Wind waves 1 to 2 ft.

Van Damme is virtually always diveable, though the vis can get mucked up with big swells and/or rain.

I would wait for a better ocean condition.  It's no fun diving in musky water and why risk it, the Abs won't go anywhere  :smt003

We're at VanDamme right now!
Launched in the chocolate brown creek (little River)and flew right into the bay.
Checked out a couple dive sites. Big swell, high winds, brown water inside clay green on the outside. You won't be measuring vis. in feet.
See you on the water tomorrow.

I feel the same about my spot but there is know river feeding into it to keep it fairly clean from sediment. Are you diving the opener?

Don't go is my opinion. Stormsurf says 35 ft surf at the Bodega Buoy. It's the first day of a 7 month season.
Be safe if you do, though.

I'll echo what everyone else is saying.  There will be plenty of chances to fill out that abalone card, and the swell is nasty out there now.

Don't do it man!  I really wanna get in the water too, but I'm settling for a day on Tomales bay testing out my new 25hp on the inflatable, and getting it ready for salmon opener and ab diving.  Personally, I think there are going to be waaay too many people attempting to get abs in very dangerous conditions, and there will most likely be fatalities.  Don't be one of em' ;)

Public Service Announcements on the radio in Mendo Land  this past few days have warned that conditions may be extreme enough to delay or preclude rescue attempts by emergency personnel  should the need arise.

I'm sad to not get in the water, but think it is best to wait.

Edit: Just looked at the surf forecast and Point Arena Cove is listed at 21.5' at 13 seconds for this morning......

Chumchum if you decide to go sometime soon I agree about Van Damme being diveable in unfavorable conditions. It my fall back location when WX is iffy.
