On sites where you buy kayaks there are little charts that say what type of water it is good for.
one that I am looking at has an eight out of ten for ocean which is good.
But can you make it more stable or worthy for the ocean?
For example platoons on the side.
Help is appreciated
Thanks

Try out the yak before u buy most are very stable. I think you only use pontoons for sight fishing

Or scrap the pontoons and look at a santa cruz raptor. I have one and love it. No prob standing, very ocean worthy.

I fish a lot of saltwater.  My OK Trident 13 is my go to for surf launches and kelp fishing.  If its launching in protected areas like Monterey and Halfmoon Bay Harbor, I use my Revo 13.  Both are seaworthy, I don't use any pontoons.  The T13, I feel is more stable.
Check out the saltwater fishing reports for Timber Cove, Stillwater Cove, Bean Hollow, Big Sur.  Just use the search box and enjoy.

buy used then, and get a kayak made by a trusted manufacturer. I would say Ocean Kayak or Wilderness systems, but there are others. It may be best to check in with a paddle shop nearest you and see what they recommend. $550 is a fair price for a used yak.

In that price range, I would look at getting a used OK Prowler 13, or look to swoop up a deal on a OK T13.  A Tarpon 140 might also be in your price range.  All of these boats are well proven ocean worthy vessels  :smt002

I have been looking at OK T13 but they are all 600
And I was hopping for 400
550 max.

That's why I said, look for the P13 as well  :smt002  Try calling places that rent kayaks, like Monterey Bay Kayak Co and see if they have a rental for sale.  Try calling Headwaters Edge in Lodi, see if they have anything on consignment.  Keep your eye on Craigslist too!

Paddle some boats before you think of buying one. Headwaters in Lodi is doing a demo day next week, you can try a lots of different boats and designs. I know I'm going to get black listed for this but I don't like ocean kayaks. I don't like the lay out or the wet seat, I felt as thoe the seat was way too low, I was always wet and not liking the performance or features. I paddle a Malibu stealth 14 so the performance went out the window but the ride is dry, the deck is awesome, and it will go anywhere. 2 miles off shore, check. Lakes, check. Down the lower sacremento river, check. Through the surf, check.

Don't think I the right boat on consignment at the moment but I will keep my eyes pealed. Feel free to come to the demo day at Sherman Island on Saturday and try lots of boats. Even if you don't find one in your budget you will figure out what features you like. Good luck on the boat search and I will keep you in mind.
