Took out my hobie for it's maiden voyage. Nada. But since rocks and lings are out of season and halibut are hard to come by it was no surprise. Ocean was greasy calm until about 11 when the winds came up. Fished outside the mile buoy just outside and the westside and eastside kelps beds. Gorgeous day. The trifecta of seals, otters, and porposies were there. And...there were steelhead jumping at the base of the wharf at about 1 pm. Christened the hobie as The Chumbucket on the beach when I finished. Loved it. First time Yaking. Absolutely awesome.

Congrats on the maiden voyage.  Did you try for perch?  See you OTW when the season starts.

Did not try for perch, Hamachi. I almost brought no gear, as I just wanted to gauge the yak...and myself. I thought I'd just test it out, especially the launch and return, but I brought a rod and some plastics at the last minute because, I had to. I had no idea that perch were gettable from a yak. Any suggestions for tecnique? I'm a newbie, and it's awhile before the the other species are legal....

Welcome to the wonderful world of kayak fishing.  Even when you're not catching any fish it's still great to be out there, and Capitola is usually a great calm spot to relax and enjoy the wildlife.

Did not try for perch, Hamachi. ... Any suggestions for tecnique?

You are asking the wrong person my friend.  I skunked last year for perch despite valiant efforts.  Of course, when I wasn't entered in AOTY, I was catching those pesky things easily.

A small hook with a grub, any colored grub (motor oil, white, etc.) should do it.  You can tip it with squid or shrimp if you like, but no need to.   From the surf, egg sinker on carolina rig with a bead...

Perch is on my list this year again... look forward to meeting you OTW.

PK,

Next time you decide to take the Chumbucket out and you want some company shoot me an email. I’m trying to hookup with someone so that I can get some ocean experience.

I’m just over the hill in San Jose.

Thanks,

Antonio
