You can catch rockfish, lingcod and perch from shore, but it's way easier from a boat...  There's lots of access along the rocks - if it's rough it makes it pretty tough and snaggy.  Abalone Point at the north end of the airstrip is a good place where it drops off to 20 feet deep right off the rocks - like I said, it's snaggy and surgy, but you can pull some fat lings, cabs and blacks out of there some days.  The launch ramp is the perch zone and the small breakwater/jetty is easy access too - once in a great while you'll hear of a California halibut caught from the launch area, but I've never seen it happen.

Osprey dropped a perch and almost hit me and fam while we were boogieboarding by the ramp last year.   :smt003

Hope he gets is business back together. A great place to look for the fish n dive is at kayak rental places especially up near shelter cove. My buddy bought used from a rental place near arcata for like half off MSRP.

The areas that Abking mentioned will produce fish and there are quite a few other spots as well.

I've fished from the shore a couple dozen times at Shelter Cove and have never been skunked. Cabs, legal lings, blacks, lots of sea trout (green ling) and perch.

If he knows how to fish in and around rocky areas he should be fine. I normally use prawns and squid for bait. He should be prepared to lose some gear though.

Hope this helps,
