Hey all with all this talk about the new Fishing lic and Ab tags, I thought I would start a post about the tools needed for 2012.  As you all know the new tags are not easy to detach. To make life easy-er I would recommend getting one of these 2 items. A Pounce Tool.  It is used to transfer a pattern from a drawing to a piece of wood.  If you type Pounce Tool into Google they sell from $6.50 and up.  You can probably buy one in a craft store.
Here is a link to where I bought mine,
http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/exl/exl30607.htm?source=froogle

Lay a piece of flat wood under your Abalone Report Card and roll the Pounce Tool across a couple of times while applying a good amount of pressure.  This will perforate the paper.  I would fold the abalone tag a couple of times before tearing it off.  But do not remove tag until ready to use cause it is void if detached from lic and not on a abalone.

or I would suggest a letter opener like this one, all you do is fold the tag over and slide it across

you can buy them here,
http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=1069366

Tool #2 needed
a hole punch will be needed to punch the tag where the zip tie goes through which can be done all 24 tags ahead of time and is legal to do checked with DFG.

Tool #3 Space pen or any other kind of pen that will not smear when wet on the tag.
This third  tool is the underwater space pen you can pick these up for any where from 15$ to as much as you want to spend, and you can find them at office depot, staples and office supply stores.

Tool #4
A dry wash cloth or towel.

Tool #5
Zip Tie's

Tool#6
A dry box to keep everything in there are several different kinds and sizes chose the one that works for you.

Here is a link to Amazon where you can buy it

These are the 6 tools I suggest you get for the 2012 abalone season.

It wasn't directed towards anyone in particular. What was meant by it was the good old days when we didn't have stamps..then reports cards...then tabs, zip ties, etc. These days you spend more time fiddle farting around filling things out, putting stuff together all the while making sure you have a survival stay legal pack with tools instead of doing what we enjoy doing.......DIVING.

More and more Regulations  :smt011

The legal try to stay legal while others keep doing what they are doing. You've got to love it!

No worries Abdiver, I got it and agree.  Hard to imagine how prying a snail off a rock ever got so complicated.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

No offense was taken by the comment, I understood whet he meant and I have to say I agree but that is the way it is now. Lets just hope they do not start making us tag them before prying off the rock !!! LOL

Matt,

That's funny but don't give the DFG any ideas on how to make it more of a nuisance for us. I wouldn't be surprised with what they will require next.

I currently have a rusty pair of scissors and hole punch that may require a tetanus shot someday.

Thanks for the info.

Small Swiss Army knife with scissors, works good for cutting tags and can cut the hole for your zip tie.
