Gonna be heading up north next week to do  some ab diving and fishing off the pt. Arena pier if anyones up there, unfortunately the oceans still closed for boats/yaks.

The Pt.Arena pier has the best pier fishing in California. You can catch blacks, blues, cabs, usually 18'' lings and greenlings. Ab guts and skirts work great as bait. The only real issue you have to worrie about is the 20'+ lift from the top of the water to the pier where I've lost fish before. Its also good to remember that its also a commercial pier. So watch out and don't get in their way.
If your launching a boat its like $25+ last time I did and make sure you've got long enough slings for your boat. For yaks their s a little walkway down to the water but it still costs a lil money. Rock fish by vechile season opens up May 1 North of Pt.A.

Interesting - I have never caught a thing from that pier on Ab guts. Other baits have worked well tho.

Whenever we fish there, we talk to all kinds of people, kids, seniors, other fishermen, tourists, the lot.

I use heavier line for the long haul-out, some guys use hoop nets.

I've caught tons of rockfish on various baits from that pier. Even got a six pound grassie from it. Have seen lots of lings caught there during salmon season. Get salmon heads from the commercial guys, put it on a 3 oz jig with a dancing stinger hook trailed on the end of the jig. Then drop it down under the cleaning table and wait. There's a small reef about 30 yards south of the pier that's easy to cast to and produces well. Wish I was coastal right now, I'd be out there with ya.

Good luck
Joe

Cool thanks, didn't know about that reef to the south. Weather conditions are gonna be rough, 13kt+ winds and 7-12ft mixed swell. Probably not gonna be getting in the water to dive lol.  Hopefully fishing from the pier wont be too bad.
