Octo-Bait

I caught a bunch of octopus when I fished Capitola this week. 

I know some of you use the dead ones as bait.  Tell me about live octopus -- is it legal to use as bait?  How do I hook 'em up so that I can hook up, if you know what I mean?

I am not sure about live ones but I used one barfed up by my first ling to catch another.  I simply hooked it to a diamond bar jig close to the eye and the hits were frequent.

i think octopus are nice bait. if you want a pack of baby ones go to ranch 99. they sell a pack of 20 for like 1.50. thats way cheap and those things are easy to keep on the hook. they last a while each.

if you get hungry just bring a lighter on your yak and cook one up! yummy! little hot sauce, garlic and you have a double use snack!

I did the same recently-just took the barfed up octopus off my leg & stuck it on a megabait. I got strikes immediately, and brought in two nice blues before the bait was pulled off.
